서울대학교 경영학과를 졸업하고 서울대학교 대학원에서 경영학석사 학위를, 미국 미시간주립대학교에서 미디어전공으로 석사학위와 박사학위를 취득했다. SK그룹, 서울특별시청, 카이스트 IT경영학부를 거쳤고 고려대 도서관장, 한국미디어경영학회 회장, 한국정보사회학회 회장을 역임했다. 고려대에서 석탑연구상을 5년에 걸쳐 수상했고, 석탑강의상을 열두번 그리고 제9회 교우회 학술상(인문사회부문)과 정부근정포장을 수상했다. Seongcheol Kim received his BBA and MBA from Seoul National University in Korea and an MA in Telecommunication and PhD in Mass Media from Michigan State University in the U.S. From 1989 to early 2008, Dr. Kim has worked for SK Group, Seoul Metropolitan Government and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He is the former president of the Korean Association for Information Society (KAIS) and Korea Media Management Association (KMMA), and the former director of Korea University Library. He received the Order of Merit from the President of Korea in 2018. He also received the Seoktop Research Award of Korea University 5 times (in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022) and the Seoktop Teaching Award of Korea University 12 times. He became the winner of the 2022 Academic Achievement Award presented by Korea University Alumni Association (KUAA).

현재 고려대 연구기획위원회 사회단장, 스마트미디어 서비스 연구센터(ITRC) 센터장, 지능정보기술과 사회문제 연구센터(SSK 대형) 센터장, 국제학술지 Digital Business 공동 편집위원장, Telecommunications Policy 부편집위원장, 디지털플랫폼 연구센터 센터장으로 활동 중이다. 미디어 산업, 뉴미디어, 디지털 비즈니스 분야에서 초학제적인 융합연구를 선도하면서 ICT 산업과 글로벌 사회의 문제를 해결하기 위해 애쓰고 있다. Professor Kim is currently the chief of the Center for ICT and Society, the chief of the Smart Media Service Research Center, and the director of Digital Platform Research Center. He is also co-editor of Digital Business journal (Elsevier) and an associate editor of Telecommunications Policy journal. Working closely with his students, he loves solving fast-changing and cutting-edge problems in digital ecosystem and global society.
