고려대학교 미디어학부를 졸업하고 미시간주립대학교에서 석사를, 위스콘신 대학교에서 커뮤니케이션학으로 박사를 받았다. 고려대학교로 부임하기 전에는 미국 뉴멕시코주립대학교의 커뮤니케이션 학과 교수로 재직했다. 저명한 국제학회들에서 우수 논문상을 수 차례 수상하였고 서른 편이 넘는 논문들을 국제저명학술지에 게재하였다. Professor Sangwon Lee earned my B.A. from the School of Media & Communication at Korea University, M.A. from Michigan State University, and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining Korea University, he held the position of assistant professor in the Department of Communication at New Mexico State University. Throughout his career, he has received multiple prestigious research awards at international conferences and journals, and has published over thirty papers in SSCI journals.

변화하는 미디어 환경이 가짜 뉴스 수용, 정치 정보 습득, 정치적 태도 형성, 정치 참여 등에 미치는 영향을 활발하게 수행해 왔다. 특히 기존의 미디어 효과 이론들을 새로운 미디어 환경에 맞춰 재구성하거나 해체하는 연구에 많은 관심이 있다. 최근에는 엔터테인먼트 콘텐츠 소비가 사회적 문제에 대한 관심을 증폭시키고 사회 변화의 원동력이 될 수 있는 메커니즘을 연구하는 것에도 관심을 가지고 있다. Professor Sangwon Lee is interested in examining the diverse impacts of the evolving media landscape on society. His research has primarily focused on investigating how the emerging media environment affects individuals' susceptibility to fake news, the acquisition of political information, the formation of political attitudes, and levels of political participation. He is particularly keen on challenging or restructuring previous media effect theories to better suit the dynamics of the contemporary media environment
