Sangwon Lee received his B.A. from the School of Media & Communication at Korea University, his M.A. from Michigan State University, and his Ph.D. in Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Before joining Korea University, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at New Mexico State University. He has published nearly 50 journal articles in leading domestic and international journals and received research and article awards from several academic associations and journals. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of Human Communication Research. He embraces a teacher-scholar model in which research and teaching mutually inform and strengthen one another.
From a media-effects perspective, my research examines how emerging media technologies, including social media and artificial intelligence (AI), influence individuals’ attitudes, behaviors, and information judgments, as well as their broader positive and negative consequences for individuals and society. My work spans diverse contexts, including politics, journalism, and entertainment, with particular interest in the following areas:
- Cognitive and Social Effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI): How AI use and reliance affect cognitive processes such as learning, knowledge accumulation, and information verification, as well as individual well-being and social and political attitudes and behaviors
- Media and Social Conflict: The conditions and mechanisms through which media and technologies amplify or mitigate differences and conflicts between social groups
Research Methods: I use a broad range of quantitative methods (surveys and experiments), qualitative methods (in-depth interviews and focus groups), and computational approaches.
